Contract: Full Time, Permanent (Term Time Only)
Start Date: September 2026

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious, inspirational, and experienced Mathematics leader to join a thriving independent school as Head of Mathematics from September 2026.

This opportunity comes at a particularly exciting time due to the continued development and expansion of the Mathematics curriculum, including the introduction of A Level Further Mathematics from September 2026. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of the department and driving excellence in teaching, learning, and student outcomes.

The purpose of the role is to lead, develop, and energise the Mathematics department, ensuring the highest standards of curriculum delivery, assessment, and academic achievement across the school.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategic development of Mathematics across the school, including co-curricular and extra-curricular provision
  • Develop, implement, and monitor effective strategies to raise attainment and progress for students across all ability levels
  • Analyse performance data and implement targeted intervention following assessment points
  • Lead and inspire the Mathematics team to deliver outstanding teaching and aspirational student outcomes
  • Quality assure departmental performance through lesson observations, work scrutiny, and assessment review
  • Ensure consistency and accountability in marking, feedback, and assessment practices
  • Oversee and maintain high-quality schemes of learning and programmes of study across all key stages
  • Develop and communicate a clear curriculum vision and subject intent for Mathematics
  • Ensure knowledge is sequenced effectively and aligned with whole-school assessment and reporting expectations
  • Review and recommend appropriate examination specifications for Key Stages 4 and 5
  • Ensure all examination entries are submitted accurately and within deadlines
  • Lead and manage a team of Mathematics teachers, providing strategic direction, coaching, and professional development
  • Support senior leaders with curriculum planning and communicate departmental staffing requirements

Candidate Requirements

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong subject expertise, excellent leadership capability, and a passion for delivering exceptional Mathematics education.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Good honours degree in Mathematics or a related subject
  • Recognised teaching qualification
  • Strong record of recent and relevant professional development
  • Master’s degree desirable but not essential
  • Proven ability to coordinate and lead Mathematics teaching across a department or school
  • Excellent curriculum knowledge across Key Stages 3–5
  • Strong understanding of GCSE and A Level administration and coordination
  • Experience using effective strategies to accelerate student progress across the full ability range
  • Ability to set clear expectations, drive high standards, and foster accountability
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
