Hours: Full-time, 8:30am to 3:30pm, Monday to Friday, or flexible days
Pay: £95 to £100 per day, paid weekly via PAYE

Do you want to help young people discover that reading can be a pleasure and writing a way to be heard? Teaching Personnel is recruiting English graduates as Teaching Assistants in primary and secondary schools across Wigan, where your passion for words can make a real difference to pupils’ progress and confidence.

It’s a natural stepping stone if you’re planning to train as an English teacher, and valuable experience for careers in publishing, tutoring, journalism or education more widely.

What you’ll be doing

• Helping pupils build their reading, writing, spelling and grammar skills, one-to-one and in groups
• Running catch-up sessions in phonics, comprehension and writing
• Encouraging reluctant readers and writers to enjoy and engage with texts
• Supporting pupils with SEND or additional needs to access lessons
• Making use of your subject knowledge to stretch the most able pupils
• Sharing what you notice about pupils’ progress with class teachers
• Helping to prepare resources and keep the classroom organised

What we’re looking for

An English degree (Literature, Language or Creative Writing) is ideal. Graduates in related subjects are welcome too.

Essential:

• A degree in English or a related subject, or in your final year
• GCSE (or equivalent) in English and maths at grade 4/C or above
• Excellent written and spoken English
• Patience, encouragement and a positive manner with children
• Reliability and a flexible approach
• A firm commitment to safeguarding and promoting children’s welfare
• The right to work in the UK

Desirable:

• Experience tutoring, mentoring, volunteering or working with children
• Knowledge of phonics, early reading or support for dyslexia
• First aid or Team Teach training
