From the textbook to the classroom

You’ve studied why people behave the way they do, what shapes their choices and how early support can change the path ahead. Schools are where that work begins. Teaching Personnel is recruiting criminology graduates as Teaching Assistants in primary and secondary schools across Wigan, helping young people stay engaged, make good choices and reach their potential.

It’s a strong move if you’re considering a future in teaching, youth justice, probation, policing, social work or the third sector, giving you practical experience of working with young people that employers look for.

What the job involves

  • Supporting pupils one-to-one and in small groups to build confidence and keep up with their learning
  • Helping young people who struggle with behaviour or engagement to feel understood and stay on track
  • Working with pupils who have SEND or social, emotional and mental health needs
  • Delivering interventions in literacy, numeracy and personal development
  • Modelling respect, resilience and positive decision-making
  • Feeding back observations to teachers and pastoral staff
  • Helping to set up resources and keep the classroom running well

About you

A criminology degree (or final year study) is ideal, though we also welcome related subjects such as law, sociology or policing.

Essential:

  • GCSE (or equivalent) in English and maths at grade 4/C or above
  • A calm, fair and patient approach with young people
  • Good judgement, reliability and a flexible attitude
  • Clear communication with pupils, colleagues and families
  • A firm commitment to safeguarding and promoting children’s welfare
  • The right to work in the UK

Desirable:

  • Experience with young people, such as mentoring, youth work, coaching or volunteering
  • Knowledge of behaviour support, restorative approaches or safeguarding
  • First aid or Team Teach training

Why join us

  • Hands-on experience that strengthens applications for teaching, youth work, policing and probation routes
  • A consultant who knows Wigan schools and will find you the right match
  • Weekly pay and the option to work flexibly
  • Opportunities to progress into longer-term or permanent roles
  • Free training, including [safeguarding, behaviour management, etc.]
  • Refer-a-friend bonus
