Cover Supervisor

Start Date: January 2026
Location: Secondary School, North Tyneside
Contract: Full-time / Term-time Only
Salary: In line with local authority pay scales (dependent on experience)

Role Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic, reliable, and confident Cover Supervisor to join January 2026. The successful candidate will supervise classes during teacher absence, maintaining a purposeful learning environment and ensuring pupils remain engaged in the set work. This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to gain experience in education or considering a future teaching career.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise whole classes across Key Stages 3 and 4 when teaching staff are absent.
  • Deliver and oversee pre-prepared lesson materials and instructions provided by teachers.
  • Ensure pupils stay on task and complete the set work.
  • Manage behaviour effectively in accordance with school policies.
  • Record attendance and report any behaviour or safeguarding concerns.
  • Provide brief feedback to class teachers on lesson completion and pupil engagement.
  • Support departments with learning activities or administrative tasks when not covering lessons.
  • Participate in the wider life of the school, including supporting with duties, clubs, and events where required.
  • Maintain the highest standards of safeguarding and pupil welfare at all times.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Confident in managing the behaviour of groups of young people.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, organised, and adaptable in busy school environments.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
  • GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent).

Desirable

  • Experience working with young people (e.g., schools, youth groups, sports coaching).
  • Understanding of classroom routines and basic behaviour-management strategies.
  • An interest in progressing to teacher training, HLTA roles, or pastoral work.
  • Awareness of SEND needs and inclusive strategies.

Training & Development

  • Full induction and training in safeguarding, behaviour management, and school procedures.
  • Opportunities to observe lessons and build confidence in classroom leadership.
  • Access to ongoing professional development and progression pathways within the school.
