A well-established Post-16 Special Educational Needs provision in Basingstoke is seeking to appoint a dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistant to support young people with learning disabilities. The provision offers a supportive, structured and person-centred environment for students aged 16–19, focusing on developing independence, employability skills, communication and life skills alongside accredited learning programmes.

Job Description
The Teaching Assistant will work closely with teaching staff and support teams to provide tailored academic and pastoral support to learners with a range of learning disabilities and additional needs.
Key Responsibilities:

Provide one-to-one and small group support to students within classroom and vocational settings.

Assist in the delivery of personalised learning programmes, including functional skills and life skills education.

Support learners in developing independence, communication and social interaction skills.

Promote positive behaviour and engagement in learning activities.

Assist students with transitions between activities and community-based learning opportunities.
-
Support the implementation of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
-
Contribute to maintaining a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Work collaboratively with teaching staff, therapists and pastoral colleagues to ensure holistic support.

Provide personal care support where required, maintaining dignity and respect at all times.
Person Specification
The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:
Essential Criteria

Experience working with young people or adults with Special Educational Needs and/or learning disabilities.

A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach.
-
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
-
Ability to promote independence while providing appropriate levels of support.
-
Commitment to safeguarding and inclusive practice.
-
Willingness to support personal care needs where necessary.
Desirable Criteria
-
Experience within a Post-16 or SEN educational setting.
-
Understanding of EHCPs and person-centred planning.
-
Relevant qualifications in education, health and social care, or support work.
-
Experience supporting learners with communication difficulties, autism, or complex needs.
Additional Information
Due to the location of the provision and the inclusion of community-based learning activities, it would be highly beneficial for applicants to hold a full UK driving licence and have access to their own transport.
The provision is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people. All appointments will be subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks.
Applicants must hold a Child Workforce DBS certificate registered on the Update Service, or be willing to obtain one prior to appointment.
