Teaching Personnel is working with a forward-thinking Pupil Referral Service in Rochdale to recruit a resilient and motivated Behaviour Support Assistant. This is a fantastic opportunity to support young people who need guidance, consistency, and strong role models to help them re-engage in education.

About the Provision

This specialist setting supports pupils aged 5–16 who have struggled in mainstream education, often presenting with:

  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
  • Behavioural challenges
  • Complex personal and educational backgrounds

The school offers a structured, trauma-informed approach, focused on rebuilding trust, improving behaviour, and creating positive pathways for learning and development.

Your Role

You will play a key role in supporting pupils both in and outside the classroom by:

  • Delivering 1:1 and small group support tailored to individual needs
  • Using effective behaviour management strategies to maintain engagement
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils
  • Supporting emotional regulation and de-escalation techniques
  • Promoting positive behaviour, teamwork, and respect
  • Adapting learning activities to suit different abilities and behaviours
  • Maintaining clear boundaries with a calm, consistent approach
  • Working closely with teaching and pastoral teams
  • Contributing to progress tracking and support plans
  • Helping create a safe, structured, and inclusive environment

Who We’re Looking For

Essential:

  • Background in sports coaching, youth work, mentoring, or behaviour support
  • Strong communication and behaviour management skills
  • Calm, patient, and resilient under pressure
  • Ability to build rapport with challenging or disengaged young people
  • Genuine passion for working with vulnerable learners
  • Full-time availability and commitment

Desirable:

  • Experience within a PRU, SEMH school, or alternative provision
  • Team Teach training (or willingness to complete)
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practice or SEMH strategies
