Job description

Full-Time Autism Support Teaching Assistant – Radyr Area

Teaching Personnel is currently recruiting for a dedicated and compassionate Autism Support Teaching Assistant to join a highly regarded primary school in the Radyr area, providing specialist one-to-one support for a pupil with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

This is a rewarding opportunity for an individual who is passionate about inclusive education and understands the importance of providing consistent, tailored support to help autistic learners thrive both academically and socially. The successful candidate will become a key part of the pupil’s daily school experience, supporting them in accessing the curriculum, managing routines, and developing confidence within the classroom environment.

About the Role

Working closely with the class teacher, ALNCo, and wider support staff, you will provide structured and individualised support throughout the school day to ensure the pupil is fully included in all aspects of school life. Your responsibilities will include adapting learning activities to suit the pupil’s individual needs, implementing visual supports and communication strategies, and using sensory or emotional regulation techniques to help the pupil remain engaged and settled throughout the day.

You will support transitions between lessons and activities, help the pupil navigate social interactions with peers, and encourage the gradual development of independence wherever appropriate. A strong understanding of routine, patience, and the ability to remain calm in challenging moments will be essential in this role.

About the School Environment

The successful applicant will be joining a well-established and highly supportive primary school recognised for its strong leadership, inclusive ethos, and commitment to pupil wellbeing. Estyn has praised similar schools in the local area for creating safe, happy, and caring learning environments where pupils feel secure and valued, with behaviour described as exemplary and nearly all pupils demonstrating positive attitudes towards learning. Those with additional learning needs are noted to receive very good support and achieve well in relation to their targets. ()

Staff work collaboratively to ensure pupils receive the highest standard of support, and the successful candidate will benefit from clear guidance, established SEN processes, and a leadership team committed to ongoing staff development.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have previous experience supporting autistic children or young people, either within education, care, support work, youth work, or behavioural intervention settings. However, the school will also consider applicants with transferable experience who demonstrate the right level of empathy, patience, and commitment to supporting pupils with additional needs.

You should be confident in building trusting relationships, implementing structured support strategies, and adapting your communication style to meet the needs of the individual pupil. A calm, resilient, and proactive approach will be vital for success in this role.
