The Role – Secondary School Teaching Assistant (Unqualified)

As an Unqualified Teaching Assistant in a Bath secondary school, you will work closely with teaching staff to support learning, behaviour, and student engagement across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. You will provide targeted support to pupils on a one-to-one and small group basis, helping them access learning and develop confidence in the classroom.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support students across KS3 and KS4 on a 1:1 and small‑group basis
  • Assist teachers with lesson delivery, classroom activities, and behaviour management
  • Encourage and motivate students to remain focused and engaged in learning
  • Provide support for pupils with additional needs, confidence issues, or emotional regulation
  • Help maintain a calm, structured, and inclusive learning environment
  • Support pupils during transitions, interventions, and non‑classroom activities
  • Build positive, consistent, and professional relationships with young people

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Experience working with children or young people aged 11–16
  • Confident communication skills and the ability to build rapport with teenagers
  • Calm, patient, and resilient approach to behaviour and learning support
  • Strong awareness of behaviour management and willingness to follow school policies
  • Reliable, proactive, and adaptable attitude
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)

Desirable (Not Essential)

  • Previous experience in secondary schools, youth work, mentoring, or support roles
  • Interest in teaching, SEND, pastoral support, or behaviour mentoring
  • Experience supporting challenging behaviour or disengaged learners
  • Safeguarding, first aid, or related training
  • Driver with access to a car (beneficial but not essential)
