Sport & PE Teaching Assistant – Sunderland Secondary Schools

Teaching Personnel is recruiting a Sport and PE Teaching Assistant for secondary schools across Sunderland from September 2026. This is a role that sits at the intersection of sport, education, and student wellbeing — and it's one that suits someone with a sporting background who wants to channel that into a meaningful career in schools.
You'll be working alongside PE staff and wider subject teachers, supporting students in and out of the sports hall, and contributing to both the curriculum and the extracurricular life of the school. For graduates with a Sports Science or PE background considering teacher training, this is an excellent foundation.
What the role involves:
- Supporting PE lessons and sporting activities across KS3 and KS4
- Assisting teachers with the delivery of a broad physical education curriculum
- Working with students on a 1:1 and small group basis where additional support is needed
- Contributing to extracurricular sport and wider school activities
- Supporting students with SEND or additional needs within a PE context
- Building positive, motivating relationships with young people
What we're looking for:
- A background in sport, physical education, or a related discipline
- Enthusiasm for working with secondary aged young people
- Confident, energetic, and professional approach
- Experience working with young people in a sporting or educational context is advantageous
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
