SEND Teaching Assistant – Barnstaple

Full-Time | September Start | Devon

Are you passionate about supporting children with additional needs and helping them reach their full potential? Teaching Personnel is looking for a dedicated SEND Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming and inclusive school in Barnstaple from September.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is patient, compassionate, and committed to making a positive difference in the lives of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

About the Role

As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with the class teacher and wider school team to provide tailored support to pupils with a range of additional needs. You may work on a 1:1 basis, in small groups, or within the wider classroom, helping pupils access their learning and develop their confidence and independence.

The role would suit someone with previous SEND experience, but we are also keen to hear from candidates with a strong interest in supporting children with additional needs.

Start Date: September 2026
Role Type: Full-time
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:45am – 3:15pm
Contract: Long-term opportunity
Pay: Competitive, dependent on experience and qualifications
Working Pattern: Term Time Only

Your Responsibilities

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEND
  • Supporting pupils to access the curriculum and participate in classroom activities
  • Helping develop pupils' communication, social, emotional, and academic skills
  • Supporting pupils with individual learning and development plans
  • Promoting independence, confidence, and positive engagement
  • Supporting positive behaviour and helping pupils manage challenges
  • Working closely with teachers, SENCOs, and other professionals
  • Creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
  • Following safeguarding and school policies at all times

We Are Looking For

  • Experience working with children or young people is desirable
  • Previous experience supporting pupils with SEND is advantageous
  • A patient, calm, and nurturing approach
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to build positive relationships with pupils
  • Confidence working both independently and as part of a team
  • A genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs
  • Reliability, flexibility, and professionalism
  • Commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing

Experience supporting pupils with ASD, ADHD, SEMH, communication difficulties, or learning difficulties would be particularly beneficial, but is not essential.
