Job Title: Autism Specialist Support Staff
Location: Primary schools across Wigan and Warrington
Contract: Full-time, long-term and permanent opportunities available
Start Date: September 2026
Teaching Personnel is seeking dedicated Autism Specialist Support Staff to work across a range of primary schools in Wigan and Warrington. Opportunities are available for immediate starts as well as positions beginning in September 2026.
We work closely with both specialist provisions and mainstream primary schools with resourced bases, all of which are looking to strengthen their teams with skilled and compassionate support professionals. These roles go beyond general classroom support, offering the chance to make a real and lasting impact on all pupils.
About the Role:
You will support pupils with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) on a 1:1 basis and in small groups, helping them to access learning and develop key life skills. Working in structured and supportive environments, your role will focus on creating consistency, reducing anxiety and promoting positive engagement.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering tailored support in line with each pupil’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
- Supporting communication using strategies such as Makaton, PECS or AAC tools
- Creating predictable routines and calm learning environments
- Assisting pupils with sensory needs and transitions throughout the school day
- Working collaboratively with teaching staff and external professionals, including speech and language therapists and occupational therapists
- Monitoring progress and maintaining accurate records in line with safeguarding and school policies
What We Are Looking For:
- Experience supporting children or young people with autism in an educational, care or similar setting, or a strong interest in this area
- A patient, consistent and reliable approach to behaviour and support
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to adapt communication styles
- Availability to work full-time, Monday to Friday, during term time
- An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
