SEN Teaching Assistant

This vacancy has now expired.

Job description

Teaching Personnel are looking for a Teaching Assistant in the Rotherham area (S61) to work with a 6 year old student who is Looked After and has experienced significant childhood trauma from a very young age.

The child has recently transitioned into a mainstream primary school after having tuition since September. He is highly anxious and requires someone who is resilient and able to deal with challenging behaviour such as absconding from the classroom and physical aggression. We are looking for someone who can work closely with the school staff to implement effective strategies to keep him calm and engaged as he gets used to the new environment.

He requires a very sensitive, nurturing approach which incorporates play based and therapy based activities. We require a Teaching Assistant to work part time (currently 2 hours per day but this could change depending how he settles after half term) with him in the school environment. There is a potential for the right person to be taken on to a permanent contract later down the line, otherwise this is a temporary role while the school source their own staff to support him.

He has moved care placements numerous times so we are looking for someone committed to building up a positive relationship with this child, who will be able to support with the transition into a school once a placement has been found.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Extremely nurturing and able to offer pastoral and academic support
  • Experienced within the EYFS/KS1 curriculum who can implement play and therapy based activities
  • Experienced at delivering 1:1 or small group tutoring for vulnerable pupils
  • Knowledgable and experienced working with childhood trauma and the impact this can have on the behaviour of children
  • Dedicated to going the extra mile for this student and committed to supporting him with the transition to his new school
  • Able to produce detailed feedback forms on a weekly basis to monitor the progress and behaviour of this child
  • Resilient and not afraid of working with challenging behaviour
  • Able to work effectively with the school team to implement whole school policies and behaviour strategies
