Sports Teaching Assistant (SEN/SEMH Support)

We are currently recruiting passionate and energetic Sports Teaching Assistants to support children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH) needs across schools in Bristol.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with a background in sports coaching, mentoring, youth work, fitness, or education who are looking to make a genuine difference in young people’s lives.

The Role

As a Sports Teaching Assistant, you will use sport, physical activity, and positive relationship-building to engage students who may struggle in mainstream education settings. You will work closely with teaching staff to support students both in and out of the classroom, helping to improve behaviour, confidence, communication, and emotional wellbeing.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting students with SEN/SEMH needs on a 1:1 and small group basis
  • Using sports and physical activity to encourage engagement and participation
  • Promoting positive behaviour and emotional regulation
  • Assisting teachers with classroom activities and learning support
  • Building strong, professional relationships with students and staff
  • Creating a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment

Requirements

  • Experience working with children or young people preferred
  • Background in sports coaching, fitness, PE, mentoring, or youth work desirable
  • Calm, resilient, and proactive attitude
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to build trust and positive relationships
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
