Make a Meaningful Difference Every Day
Do you have a passion for supporting young people who need an extra helping hand?
Teaching Personnel is working with secondary schools across Manchester seeking dedicated Behaviour Support Assistants to support students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. You could be working with pupils who experience anxiety, ADHD, trauma, attachment difficulties, low self-esteem, emotional dysregulation, or behaviours that challenge. Many of these young people face significant barriers to learning and need positive role models who can provide consistency, encouragement, and support.
The Role
As a SEMH Behaviour Support Assistant, you will work closely with teaching and pastoral staff to support students academically, emotionally, and socially. You'll help create a safe, positive learning environment where young people can feel supported, valued, and ready to succeed.
No two days are the same. Whether you're delivering one-to-one interventions, supporting students during lessons, or helping de-escalate challenging situations, you'll play a key role in improving outcomes for vulnerable learners.
Your Responsibilities
- Build strong, trusting relationships with students.
- Provide one-to-one and small group support.
- Support pupils with behavioural, emotional, and social needs.
- Implement behaviour management strategies and intervention plans.
- Encourage positive engagement with learning and school life.
- Support students during periods of emotional dysregulation.
- Promote resilience, confidence, self-regulation, and independence.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral teams, SENCOs, and external professionals.
- Monitor and report on student progress, behaviour, and wellbeing.
- Act as a positive role model, helping students make positive choices.
What We're Looking For
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- A calm, patient, and resilient approach.
- The ability to remain professional in challenging situations.
- Confidence in setting clear boundaries while maintaining empathy.
- A genuine passion for improving outcomes for young people.
- An understanding of SEMH, trauma-informed practice, or behaviour support strategies (desirable but not essential).
