Teaching Personnel is recruiting for a SEMH Student Engagement Mentor to work on a full-time basis within a specialist Secondary SEMH school in the Manchester area.

This rewarding role involves supporting students aged 11-16 who experience a range of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including anxiety, depression, attachment difficulties, trauma, low self-esteem, emotional dysregulation, ADHD, ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder), challenging behaviour, and difficulties engaging with mainstream education. Many pupils require patient, understanding adults who can build trusting relationships and help them develop confidence, resilience, and positive coping strategies.

About the Role

As a SEMH Student Engagement Mentor, you will play a crucial role in helping students regulate emotions, engage with learning, and make positive choices both inside and outside the classroom. This is an excellent opportunity for educators, youth workers, sports coaches, support workers, and behavioural specialists looking to make a lasting difference in the lives of vulnerable young people.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build strong, positive relationships with students who require additional emotional and behavioural support.
  • Provide 1:1 and small-group mentoring sessions.
  • Support students in managing emotions and developing effective coping strategies.
  • Encourage attendance, engagement, and participation in learning activities.
  • Implement behaviour support plans and de-escalation techniques where required.
  • Promote positive behaviour and reward student achievements.
  • Work closely with teachers, pastoral teams, and external professionals to support individual learning and wellbeing plans.
  • Assist during lessons, transitions, break times, and enrichment activities.
  • Act as a positive role model, helping students develop confidence, resilience, and independence.
  • Accurately record incidents, progress, and interventions.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience working with young people with SEMH needs, behavioural challenges, or additional support needs is highly desirable.
  • Backgrounds in education, youth work, mental health support, sports coaching, residential care, counselling, or behaviour mentoring are welcomed.
  • Strong behaviour management and relationship-building skills.
  • Calm, resilient, and proactive approach to supporting challenging behaviour.
  • Ability to remain positive and professional in demanding situations.
  • Genuine passion for improving outcomes for young people.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to apply through Teaching Personnel.
  • Right to work in the UK.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
