Job description

Qualified Secondary Teacher – SEMH

Pupil Referral Unit (PRU)
Location: Oldham, Manchester
Start Date: ASAP
Contract: Full-time, Long-term (Temp to Perm opportunities available)

Teaching Personnel are currently working in partnership with a Secondary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) to recruit a motivated and committed Qualified Teacher to support pupils aged 11–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This role is open to qualified teachers with limited PRU or SEMH experience who are keen, eager to learn and passionate about making a difference. The PRU has a strong, experienced pastoral and teaching team, offering guidance, mentoring and ongoing support to help you develop confidence within alternative provision.

Pupils attending the PRU are unable to access mainstream education due to challenging behaviour, trauma-related experiences, anxiety, emotional regulation difficulties and disrupted education. Class sizes are small, allowing for a highly personalised and relationship-led approach to teaching and learning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver adapted and engaging lessons across KS3 and/or KS4
  • Support pupils to re-engage with education through consistent, structured teaching
  • Create a safe, calm and supportive learning environment
  • Manage behaviour using positive, trauma-informed and restorative approaches
  • Deliver learning in small groups and 1:1 where required
  • Follow individual behaviour plans, risk assessments and EHCP targets with support
  • Monitor pupil progress and provide regular feedback
  • Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, pastoral teams, SENCOs and external professionals

The Ideal Candidate Will:

  • Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Be enthusiastic, motivated and keen to develop experience within SEMH and PRU settings
  • Demonstrate strong classroom presence and willingness to adapt teaching approaches
  • Be patient, resilient and reflective
  • Have good behaviour management foundations and be open to training
  • Communicate effectively and work well as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Be committed to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing

Previous PRU or SEMH experience is desirable but not essential — a positive attitude, consistency and commitment to learning are key.

Why Work with Teaching Personnel?

  • Competitive daily pay rates
  • Dedicated Alternative Provision consultant support

  • Supportive PRU settings with experienced leadership and mentoring
