Teaching Assistant (Full-Time)

Location: Basingstoke
Setting: 11–16 Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Provision – Pupil Referral Unit (PRU, Short Stay)
Contract: Full-Time
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

An established alternative education provision in Basingstoke is seeking to appoint a committed and resilient Teaching Assistant to support pupils aged 11–16 within a Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) setting. The provision operates as a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) and short stay school, offering a structured, supportive and nurturing environment for young people who require additional behavioural and emotional support in order to access education successfully.

Job Description

The Teaching Assistant will work closely with teaching and pastoral staff to provide high-quality support to pupils both inside and outside of the classroom.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the delivery of personalised and differentiated learning programmes.

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs.

  • Assist in maintaining a calm, safe and purposeful learning environment.

  • Implement behaviour support strategies in line with the school’s policies.

  • Encourage positive behaviour, engagement and attendance.

  • Support pupils in developing emotional regulation, resilience and social skills.

  • Assist with preparation of learning materials and classroom organisation.

  • Supervise pupils during lessons, transitions and other structured times of the day.

  • Build positive, professional relationships with pupils to promote trust and consistency.

  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff, pastoral teams and senior leaders to support pupil progress and wellbeing.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

Essential Criteria

  • Experience working with children or young people.

  • A patient, calm and resilient approach to supporting behaviour.

  • Ability to build positive and professional relationships with pupils.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to remain adaptable and composed in challenging situations.

  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.

Desirable Criteria

  • Previous experience in an SEMH, PRU or alternative provision setting.

  • Understanding of behaviour management strategies and trauma-informed practice.

  • Experience supporting pupils with additional learning needs.

  • Relevant qualifications in education, childcare or youth work.

Safeguarding and Compliance

The provision is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All appointments are subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks.

Applicants must hold a Child Workforce DBS certificate registered on the Update Service, or be willing to obtain one prior to appointment.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
