Job Description

The Cover Supervisor provides effective classroom supervision in the absence of the regular teacher, ensuring a safe and productive learning environment. The role involves managing student behaviour, delivering pre-prepared lesson plans or activities, and supporting the continuity of education during teacher absences. The Cover Supervisor maintains discipline, facilitates learning, and assists students with tasks as required, contributing to the smooth running of the school day.

Job Duties

  • Supervise classes according to timetable and cover requirements, ensuring students remain engaged and on task.
  • Implement lesson plans and learning activities provided by teaching staff or school leadership.
  • Maintain student behaviour and discipline in line with school policies and safeguarding standards.
  • Report any incidents, concerns or issues to the relevant school staff promptly and accurately.
  • Assist students with understanding and completing assigned work where appropriate.
  • Support school routines, including registration, break times, and transitions between lessons.
  • Ensure the classroom environment remains safe, tidy, and conducive to learning.
  • Adhere to school safeguarding and health and safety procedures at all times.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance and behaviour during cover periods.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with school leadership and support staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Good general education, including GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics at grade C/4 or above.
  • Basic understanding of secondary school curriculum and classroom procedures.
  • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check clearance or willingness to undergo one prior to appointment.

Education

  • Minimum of secondary education with qualifications as described above.
  • Additional qualifications or training in education, child development, or related fields are advantageous but not essential.

Experience

  • Previous experience working with children or young people in an educational or supervisory setting is preferred.
  • Experience managing groups and maintaining discipline in a classroom environment is desirable.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to engage positively with students and staff.
  • Ability to manage student behaviour effectively and calmly.
  • Organisational skills to follow plans and maintain accurate records.
  • Basic IT skills to use school systems for reporting and communication.
  • Awareness of safeguarding requirements and commitment to child protection.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to varying classroom situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Level 2 or 3 qualifications in Education Support or Teaching Assistance.
  • First Aid qualification or willingness to obtain one.
  • Training in behaviour management or safeguarding.

Working Conditions

  • The role is based within secondary schools in the Reading area, South East England.
  • Full-time hours, typically during standard school hours Monday to Friday.
  • Temporary assignment with the possibility of extension depending on school requirements.
  • Work involves standing and moving around the classroom and school premises.
  • Exposure to typical school environment noise and activity levels.
  • Occasional requirement to adapt to last-minute changes in cover needs.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
