Job description

Secondary School Cover Supervisor

Job Purpose

To supervise whole classes during the short-term absence of teaching staff, ensuring that students remain on task and that a positive, safe learning environment is maintained.

Key Responsibilities

Classroom Supervision

  • Supervise classes in the absence of the class teacher, following work set by teaching staff

  • Manage student behaviour in line with school policies

  • Ensure students remain focused and engaged in learning activities

  • Take accurate attendance and report concerns as required

Learning Support

  • Provide guidance to students on tasks set, without teaching new content

  • Support students with their learning and encourage independent work

  • Respond appropriately to questions and refer academic issues to teaching staff

Behaviour and Welfare

  • Promote positive behaviour and respectful relationships

  • Deal with minor incidents and report more serious issues in line with school procedures

  • Support the wellbeing, safeguarding, and welfare of students at all times

Professional Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively with teaching staff, heads of department, and senior leaders

  • Provide feedback to teaching staff on student engagement and behaviour

  • Assist with administrative tasks related to cover supervision when required

  • Support whole-school activities and events as directed

 

Person Specification

Essential

  • Experience working with children or young people (preferably in a school setting)

  • Strong classroom management and communication skills

  • Ability to engage and motivate secondary-age students

  • Calm, confident, and professional approach

  • Good organisational and time-management skills

Desirable

  • Degree or qualification related to education or child development

  • Experience as a cover supervisor or teaching assistant

  • Interest in pursuing teacher training in the future

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
