Job description

Job Title: Teacher of Science (Chemistry Specialist Preferred) – Maternity Cover
Location: Thirsk, North Yorkshire
Start Date: 21st April 2026
Contract: Part-time (0.6 FTE) – Maternity Cover

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Science Teacher, ideally with a specialism in Chemistry, to join a supportive secondary school in Thirsk, North Yorkshire on a maternity cover basis starting 21st April 2026.

This is a 0.6 part-time role teaching GCSE Science, with a focus on Chemistry where possible. Applications are also welcome from teachers with a specialism in Biology or Physics who are confident delivering general Science at GCSE level.

The Role

  • Teach GCSE Science, with a preference for Chemistry specialism

  • Deliver engaging, high-quality lessons that support student progress

  • Work collaboratively with the Science department

  • In addition to the teaching timetable, provide general cover for other lessons during available periods

The Ideal Candidate

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent

  • A degree in Chemistry or a related Science discipline (other Science specialists considered)

  • Experience teaching GCSE Science

  • Strong classroom management and the ability to engage students of varying abilities

  • A flexible and supportive approach to covering additional lessons when required
