Job description

BSL Nursery Teaching Assistant

We are currently recruiting for a compassionate and skilled Nursery Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a pupil within a welcoming primary school in Swansea.

Role Overview
This position involves supporting a nursery-aged pupil who is non-verbal and is currently learning British Sign Language (BSL) as their primary method of communication. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping the child develop their communication skills, engage in learning activities, and access the Early Years curriculum within a nurturing and inclusive environment.

Position Details

  • Role: Nursery Teaching Assistant (1:1)
  • Location: Primary School, Swansea
  • Hours: Mornings only, Monday to Friday
  • Pay Rate: £13.75 an hour starting (dependent on experience and qualifications)
  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Contract: Ongoing/Long-term (subject to review)

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a non-verbal nursery pupil
  • Use and model BSL to support the child’s developing communication skills
  • Encourage interaction, engagement, and participation in classroom and play-based activities
  • Support the child’s emotional wellbeing, independence, and social development
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENCo, and external professionals where required
  • Adapt activities and resources to meet the pupil’s individual needs
  • Monitor and provide feedback on progress and communication development

Essential Requirements

  • BSL Level 2 or Level 3 qualification
  • Experience working with young children, ideally within an Early Years or nursery setting
  • Understanding of supporting children with communication needs or additional learning needs
  • A patient, nurturing, and proactive approach
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain)

Desirable

  • Experience supporting non-verbal pupils or children with speech and language needs
  • Knowledge of Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
