Classroom Assistant – Secondary School ALN Support – Newport

£93–£110 per day | Start April 2026 | Potential Permanent Role

Teaching Personnel are recruiting a Classroom Assistant to work within a secondary school in Newport, supporting pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) on a full-time basis from 4th May 2026.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to gain experience as an ALN Classroom Assistant in a supportive and structured secondary school environment. The role will run until August 2026 initially, with potential to secure a permanent position from September.

You will support pupils aged 11–16 with a range of additional learning needs including:

  • Autism (ASD)
  • Speech and Language Needs
  • Behavioural needs
  • Moderate learning difficulties
  • Sensory needs

This role includes both 1:1 support and small group support, helping pupils access learning and build confidence in the classroom.


Role Details

  • Job Title: Classroom Assistant / Teaching Assistant (ALN)
  • Location: Newport
  • Start Date: 4th May 2026
  • Contract: Until August 2026 (potential permanent opportunity from September)
  • Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm
  • Pay: £465 – £550 weekly pay (depending on experience)

Classroom Assistant Responsibilities

As a Secondary School Classroom Assistant, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 support for pupils with ALN
  • Support small groups within the classroom
  • Assist teachers with lesson delivery and engagement strategies
  • Support pupils with communication, behaviour and routines
  • Encourage participation in both academic and vocational learning
  • Work alongside the school’s ALN department and teaching staff
  • Provide personal care where required
  • Supervise pupils during transitions and break/lunch when needed

Ideal Candidate

The ideal Classroom Assistant will have:

  • Experience supporting children or young people with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) or SEN
  • Experience working in a secondary school, care setting, youth work or similar environment (desirable)
  • Confidence supporting behaviour and engagement
  • A proactive and patient approach
  • Strong teamwork skills

A formal Teaching Assistant qualification is not essential.


Requirements to Work in Schools

To work as a Classroom Assistant in Cardiff schools, you will need:

  • Enhanced DBS (Child Workforce)
  • Registration with the Education Workforce Council (EWC)
  • Safeguarding training (Teaching Personnel can provide this)

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
