About the Role

Thinking about becoming a teacher and want classroom experience before fully committing? Already supporting students through tutoring or mentoring?

We are looking for an enthusiastic and reliable Unqualified Teacher to join one of our welcoming secondary schools in the Newport area.

In this role, you will supervise classes during short-term teacher absences, ensuring pupils stay on task and engaged with the work set. Subject knowledge is a valuable advantage—especially if you’re covering areas you’re genuinely passionate about. Whether your background is in maths, science, English, or any other subject, there will be opportunities to make use of that expertise.

Alongside this, the key qualities we look for are confidence, adaptability, and the ability to create a positive learning environment, as well as the confidence to step into any classroom and cover any subject when needed.

Although this role does not require a formal teaching qualification, candidates must be able to discuss their relevant experience, skills, qualifications or academic background during interview and will be required to complete thorough vetting checks.

This is a fantastic opportunity for graduates, aspiring teachers, trainee teachers, individuals with leadership experience, or anyone wanting to develop strong behaviour management skills. It’s an excellent stepping stone into education and a great way to gain meaningful classroom experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervising classes across Key Stages 3 and 4
  • Delivering pre-prepared lesson materials and instructions
  • Managing classroom behaviour in line with school policies
  • Supporting pupils with their learning and maintaining a positive classroom environment
  • Applying behaviour management and de-escalation strategies
  • Providing feedback to teaching staff at the end of the day

Requirements

  • Experience working with young people (education, youth work, coaching, etc.) or experience managing/leading groups
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
  • EWC Registration (or willingness to obtain one)
  • Must be aged 18 or over
  • Strong understanding of the school curriculum and core subjects
  • A genuine interest in education and supporting young people

Why This Role is Ideal for Future Teachers

  • Gain hands-on classroom experience before teacher training
  • Build confidence in behaviour management and lesson delivery
  • Understand the day-to-day life of secondary schools
  • Strengthen your CV for PGCE or other education pathways
