Job Description: SEN Teaching Assistant

Location: South East England, East Sussex, Lewes

Job Type: Permanent, expected to work Full-Time hours

Salary: £77 - £87 Per day

Working in KS2 with a student who has Autism and struggles with engagement, we are seeking a dedicated and empathetic SEN Teaching Assistant to join our team. As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the educational and social development of the student, ensuring their needs are met and enabling them to reach their full potential.

Job Duties:

  • Provide one-to-one support and assistance to the student with Autism, both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Adapt and implement appropriate strategies to promote engagement and active participation in learning activities.
  • Assist the student in accessing the curriculum, modifying materials and resources as needed.
  • Monitor and record the student's progress, identifying areas for improvement and communicating with the teaching staff.
  • Support the student during social interactions, encouraging positive relationships with peers and facilitating inclusion.
  • Collaborate with the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) and teaching team to develop and implement individualised education plans (IEPs) and behaviour management strategies.
  • Provide personal care and support, if required, ensuring the student's safety and well-being at all times.
  • Maintain a supportive and nurturing environment, fostering independence, confidence, and self-esteem.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/carers, sharing progress, concerns, and strategies to support the student's development.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Level 2 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (or equivalent).
  • Experience working with children or young people with Autism or special educational needs.
  • Knowledge of different learning styles and strategies to support individual needs.
  • Understanding of safeguarding procedures and responsibilities within an educational setting.

Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

  • A genuine passion for supporting children with special educational needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate with teaching staff.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Basic IT skills for recording and reporting purposes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (or equivalent).
  • Additional training in Autism Spectrum Disorders or other relevant special educational needs.

Working Conditions:

This role requires working in a mainstream primary school setting, primarily in KS2. You will be working closely with the student with Autism, providing support during classroom activities, and occasionally assisting with personal care. The role may involve some physical activity, such as accompanying the student during outdoor play or off-site visits. You will be expected to work full-time hours, following the school's term calendar.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
