Thinking About Becoming a Teacher?

If you're considering a future career in teaching but want to gain valuable classroom experience before committing to teacher training, this could be the perfect opportunity.

Teaching Personnel is recruiting an ALN Teaching Assistant to join a supportive and inclusive secondary school in the Duffryn area of Newport. This role is designed for individuals who are passionate about helping young people achieve their potential while developing the skills, confidence and experience needed for a successful career in education.

Working alongside experienced teachers and support staff, you'll gain first-hand insight into classroom practice while making a genuine difference to the lives of pupils aged 11-16.

Why Start as a Teaching Assistant?

Many successful teachers begin their careers as Teaching Assistants.

This role provides a unique opportunity to:

✅ Gain daily classroom experience in a secondary school setting

✅ Learn behaviour management techniques from experienced educators

✅ Develop an understanding of how pupils learn and engage

✅ Work alongside teaching staff and understand lesson delivery

✅ Build confidence supporting students with a range of learning needs

✅ Strengthen your CV before applying for teacher training or PGCE courses

✅ Decide if teaching is the right long-term career path for you

You'll be supporting students with Additional Learning Needs (ALN), helping them engage with learning, build confidence and overcome barriers to education.

What Will the Role Involve?

As an ALN Teaching Assistant, you'll play a key part in supporting pupils across the school through:

  • One-to-one support for learners requiring additional assistance
  • Working with small intervention groups
  • Supporting pupils with Autism, ADHD, dyslexia and other additional learning needs
  • Encouraging positive behaviour and classroom engagement
  • Assisting with literacy, numeracy and organisational skills
  • Supporting students' emotional wellbeing and confidence
  • Helping teachers create an inclusive learning environment
  • Building positive relationships with students and staff

No two days are the same, making this an excellent opportunity to develop a wide range of skills that are highly valuable within education.

Optional Career Progression Opportunities

For those considering a long-term career in education, there may be opportunities to progress into a Cover Supervisor role.

A Cover Supervisor manages a classroom in the absence of the teacher, ensuring students remain focused and engaged with the work provided. This can be excellent preparation for future teacher training and allows you to develop classroom leadership and management skills.

Importantly, this progression is completely optional. It is only available to Teaching Assistants who feel confident in their role, have demonstrated success within the school environment, and would like to take on additional responsibility.

There is absolutely no expectation to progress into Cover Supervision, and many candidates choose to remain in Teaching Assistant positions where they continue to have a significant impact on students' education.

The Cover Supervisor role sits within the higher end of the advertised pay range (£575 per week), reflecting the additional responsibility involved.

Who Would Suit This Role?

We're particularly keen to hear from:

  • Graduates considering a teaching career
  • Individuals planning to apply for a PGCE or teacher training programme
  • Psychology graduates
  • Education Studies graduates
  • Sports coaches
  • Youth workers
  • Learning mentors
  • Support workers
  • Residential childcare practitioners
  • Anyone with experience working with young people

Previous school-based experience is beneficial but not essential.

The Successful Candidate Will Be

✔ Passionate about education and supporting young people

✔ Interested in developing a future career in teaching

✔ Patient, caring and empathetic

✔ Confident communicating with both students and staff

✔ Adaptable and resilient

✔ Eager to learn and develop professionally
