SEN Teaching Assistant

To work with a school in Widnes as part of a professional team to support teaching and learning for a SEN pupil. Providing specialist assistance for a child who needs particular help to overcome barriers to learning including learning difficulties and/or behavioural, social, communication, sensory or physical disabilities.

Key duties:

  • Implement planned learning activities/teaching programmes as agreed with the teacher (or preschool manager), adjusting activities according to pupils’ responses as appropriate
  • Work with pupils on therapy or care programmes, designed and supervised by a therapist/care professional
  • Participate in planning and evaluation of learning activities with the teacher, providing feedback to the teacher on pupil progress and behaviour
  • Support the teacher in monitoring, assessing and recording pupil progress/activities
  • Provide feedback to pupils in relation to attainment and progress under the guidance of the teacher (or preschool manager)
  • Support learning by arranging/providing resources for lessons/activities under the direction of the teacher or preschool manager
  • Share information about pupils with other staff, parents / carers, internal and external agencies, as appropriate
  • Attend to pupils’ personal needs including toileting, hygiene, dressing and eating, as well as help with social, welfare and health matters, reporting problems to the teacher (or preschool manager) as appropriate
  • Understand and support independent learning and inclusion of all pupils if required.

Knowledge and understanding of:

  • Supporting children with Special Educational Needs
  • How children learn and how to motivate them
  • Child development and the ways in which children learn
  • How to support children in literacy and numeracy
  • The roles played by various adults in a child’s education
  • Knowledge of relevant policies/codes of practice and awareness of legislation
  • Aware of safeguarding procedures and how to provide a safe environment for children

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
