An exciting opportunity to be part of a specialist team who provide education for amazing young people. 

A school based in Sturminster Newton for children with profound and multiple (PMLD) , Severe (SLD), Moderate (MLD) or complex learning difficulties. Some children have additional sensory or physical impairments, speech and language disorders or medical needs, others are statemented as being within the autistic spectrum.

The school provides for 160 children and students between the ages of 2 and 19 years.

For more able students following the secondary timetable, the expected leaving age will be 16 when they will move onto a further education institution such as a college. Students who are placed in the PMLD/SLD classes are more likely to remain until they are 19 in the Post 16 provision.

About the role: 

The role of the Teaching assistant is to provide a happy, secure and caring environment in which learning can best take place. The support provided is for the student, the teacher, the curriculum and the school. The role involves carrying out a range of tasks, under the direction of a teacher, from contributing to the general care of students and helping to assist in the delivery of specific programmes. 

Duties include but are not limited to: 

  • Establish and maintain relationships with students 
  • Responding to health problems and helping with personal care 
  • Enable students to participate in learning activities by providing support for their specific difficulties 

This is a full time position working 08:45 - 15:30, Monday - Friday.

  • You have experience working in an education setting or have experience working with young people who have special needs 
  • You are passionate, proactive and dedicated about improving the learning opportunities for children and young people.
  • You have an ability to work with a range of children and young people with additional and complex needs.
  • You are a team player who can build good working relationships with colleagues.
  • You are flexible, enthusiastic and resilient, with a good sense of humour.
  • You have good numeracy, literacy and ICT skills.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
