Job description

eaching Personnel are working with a primary school in the Llanishen area of Cardiff who are looking for a committed and adaptable Teaching Assistant to join their Specialist Resource Base (SRB).

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to work closely with pupils who require additional support with their learning, communication, emotional regulation and day-to-day development.

About the Role

Working within the SRB, you will play an important role in helping pupils access education and feel comfortable and supported throughout the school day.

The role will involve working alongside experienced teachers and support staff to provide individualised and small-group support, adapting activities and approaches according to each pupil's needs.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 and small-group basis
  • Helping pupils access learning activities both within the SRB and, where appropriate, the wider school
  • Supporting children with additional learning needs and differing levels of independence
  • Helping pupils develop their communication, social and emotional skills
  • Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and managing challenging moments
  • Recognising individual triggers and using appropriate strategies to help pupils remain settled
  • Encouraging positive behaviour and reinforcing clear boundaries
  • Supporting pupils during transitions between activities and different areas of the school
  • Adapting classroom activities so pupils can participate successfully
  • Encouraging independence rather than completing tasks for pupils
  • Building trusting and consistent relationships with pupils
  • Working closely with teachers, support staff and other professionals involved in pupils' education
  • Helping create a calm, structured and inclusive learning environment

The Right Person

The school is looking for someone who understands that working in an SRB can be very different from a mainstream classroom.

You will need to be patient, observant and adaptable, with the ability to recognise when a pupil may be becoming overwhelmed and respond calmly and appropriately.

Experience supporting children with ALN, autism, ADHD, communication difficulties, sensory needs or behavioural needs would be particularly valuable.

However, the school is also open to candidates who have developed relevant skills through other settings, including youth work, care, sports coaching, residential settings or supporting young people outside of education.

⭐ What Will Make You Stand Out?

  • Experience working with children or young people with additional needs
  • A calm and consistent approach
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • The ability to remain composed in challenging situations
  • An understanding of sensory needs and emotional regulation
  • Confidence following individual support plans and guidance from experienced staff
  • A willingness to learn and develop your understanding of ALN
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a close-knit team
  • A genuine interest in helping pupils become more confident and independent

Every pupil is different, so the ability to adapt your approach rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all method will be particularly important.

The Opportunity

This is a rewarding opportunity to gain valuable experience within a specialist setting while making a meaningful difference to pupils who may need additional support to engage with school.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ’s on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
