Job description

Teaching Assistant – Alternative Provision School

An alternative provision school is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistant to join their supportive and nurturing team. The school is committed to providing a safe and inclusive learning environment for children who face challenges in mainstream education. With a strong focus on personalised learning and emotional wellbeing, the team works collaboratively to help every student achieve their full potential.

In this role, the Teaching Assistant will work closely with students on a one-to-one basis within the classroom setting. The successful candidate will support learners with both their academic engagement and emotional regulation, helping them remain focused, confident, and ready to learn. Building strong, positive relationships is a key aspect of this role, along with the ability to respond calmly and effectively to challenging behaviour.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 classroom support, assisting students with their learning and emotional needs.
  • Help implement personalised learning plans and behaviour support strategies.
  • Build trusting, positive relationships to encourage engagement and participation.
  • Use de-escalation techniques to manage challenging behaviour and promote a positive atmosphere.
  • Monitor and report on student progress, sharing information with teachers and support staff.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, parents, and external professionals to support holistic development.
  • Assist with classroom activities and general administrative tasks.
  • Participate in relevant training and professional development.

Requirements

  • Experience working with children, particularly those with additional needs, is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport quickly.
  • Patience, resilience, and a calm, consistent approach to challenging behaviour.
  • Commitment to promoting a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Relevant qualifications in education or child development are beneficial but not essential.

The ideal Teaching Assistant is someone resilient, empathetic, and highly supportive. They will be confident working one-to-one with students, helping them feel safe, understood, and motivated. Above all, they will play an important role in creating a positive environment where students can grow in confidence and reach their full potential.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
