Speech and Language Teaching Assistant – Full-Time
Location: Blackburn
Start Date: September
Contract Type: Full-Time
We are seeking to appoint a caring, enthusiastic, and dedicated Speech and Language Teaching Assistant to join our supportive and inclusive school community in Blackburn. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about helping children develop their communication, language, and social interaction skills in a nurturing educational environment.
Role Overview
As a Speech and Language Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with class teachers, the SENCO, and Speech and Language Therapists to support pupils with speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN). You will play a vital role in helping pupils access learning, build confidence, and achieve their full potential.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with speech, language, and communication needs
- Deliver targeted speech and language interventions under the guidance of professionals
- Support pupils with communication difficulties, including autism and developmental language disorders
- Assist teachers in adapting classroom activities to meet pupils’ communication needs
- Encourage pupils’ social interaction, confidence, and emotional development
- Monitor and record pupil progress, providing feedback to teachers, therapists, and the SENCO
- Help maintain a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment
- Support behaviour management in line with school policies
- Assist with personal care where required
Essential Requirements
- Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent)
- Previous experience working with children with SEN or speech and language needs
- Good understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Patient, nurturing, and flexible approach
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Commitment to supporting the individual needs of every child
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience working within a school or educational setting
- Knowledge of speech and language strategies and interventions
- Experience supporting children with autism or communication difficulties
- Understanding of visual communication tools such as PECS or Makaton
- First Aid qualification or willingness to undertake training

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
