SEND Teaching Assistant – Autism Support (Wigan)

A primary school in Wigan is seeking a Teaching Assistant with strong experience supporting pupils with autism. This role will involve working both 1:1 and with small groups, supporting pupils to access learning through structured routines, visual timetables, and tailored interventions. You will play a key role in helping pupils develop communication, social interaction, and independence skills within the classroom environment.

You will work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to implement EHCP targets, adapt learning materials, and support behaviour using consistent, autism-friendly strategies. The role will require patience, adaptability, and the ability to build trust with pupils who may find the classroom environment overwhelming at times.

This role is due to start in October 2026 and is expected to run on a full-time, ongoing basis.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience working with autism in a school or similar setting, a calm and consistent approach, and a good understanding of strategies such as visual supports, sensory regulation, and structured routines.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
