Job description

Help Rebuild Futures – Secondary Maths & English Tutor Needed (Basildon & Surrounding Areas)

Are you a skilled secondary tutor with a passion for helping young people overcome barriers to learning?

We are seeking dedicated Maths and English tutors to support vulnerable students in Basildon and surrounding areas. These learners are currently out of mainstream education and often working below age-related expectations but with the right support, they can make meaningful progress and achieve recognised qualifications.

About the Role

You will provide 1:1 or small group tuition in Maths and English, typically between 9:00am – 3:00pm, supporting students to work towards functional skills, GCSEs, or other appropriate qualifications. Lessons will need to be engaging, flexible, and tailored to each learner’s starting point.

Many of the young people you’ll support will have SEN (Special Educational Needs) and EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans), including needs such as SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health), autism, and global developmental delay.

Where Sessions Take Place
Tuition is delivered in a range of settings depending on the needs of the young person. This may include:

  • In the family home or care home
  • Online sessions
  • Within a school setting
  • Local libraries or community spaces

Flexibility and confidence working across different environments is essential.

Availability
A minimum of 10–15 hours per week is required, with flexibility within school hours.

What We’re Looking For

  • A confident tutor in secondary Maths and English
  • Experience supporting students with SEN, particularly SEMH, autism, and global delay
  • Understanding of working with learners with EHCPs
  • A calm, patient and empathetic approach
  • Ability to adapt teaching strategies to meet a wide range of needs and abilities
  • A commitment to helping students build confidence and work towards achievable qualifications

Why This Role Matters
These students may have had disrupted or negative experiences with education. Your role is not just to teach but to re-engage, motivate, and inspire. By building trust and celebrating progress, you’ll help them take important steps toward a more positive future.

If you’re ready to make a real difference through education, we’d love to hear from you.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ’s on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.

We undertake safeguarding checks on all workers in accordance with DfE statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ this may also include an online search as part of our due diligence on shortlisted applicants.
