Job description

Teaching Personnel are recruiting dedicated and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistants to support secondary schools across Rochdale from September 2026. As a senior recruitment consultant working closely with schools in the area, I am supporting a growing demand for specialist support staff to work with pupils with additional learning needs, making this an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to build or develop a career within special educational needs.

We are working with a range of secondary schools and specialist provisions across Rochdale, offering flexible day-to-day supply, short-term assignments and long-term SEN support roles. These positions are well suited to candidates with previous experience in education, care, youth work or support settings, as well as graduates and aspiring teachers looking to gain hands-on SEN experience.

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils with a variety of additional needs, including autism (ASC), ADHD, speech and language difficulties, and social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH). You will work closely with teaching staff and SENCOs to ensure students are supported both academically and emotionally, helping them to access the curriculum and engage positively in the classroom.

The role includes:

  • Supporting students with special educational needs on a one-to-one basis or in small groups
  • Assisting the class teacher with adapting learning materials to meet individual needs
  • Promoting positive behaviour and emotional regulation strategies
  • Supporting pupils with communication and social interaction
  • Monitoring progress and providing feedback to teaching staff and SENCOs

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEN, or a strong interest in this area
  • Strong communication, patience and empathy
  • The ability to build positive relationships with pupils and staff
  • A proactive, flexible and resilient approach
  • An enhanced DBS on the update service, or willingness to apply

Working with Teaching Personnel provides access to a wide network of SEN Teaching Assistant jobs and support roles across Rochdale. You will benefit from flexible working arrangements, competitive daily rates, and opportunities for long-term placements and permanent roles. You will also receive ongoing support from a dedicated consultant along with access to CPD and training, including SEN-specific development.

This is a high-demand area within the education sector, particularly for SEN Teaching Assistant roles, Learning Support Assistant positions, and Autism Support roles in Rochdale secondary schools. These opportunities are ideal for candidates seeking experience in SEN education or progression into teaching, educational psychology or specialist support roles.

To apply, submit your CV today or contact Teaching Personnel to discuss current SEN Teaching Assistant vacancies and support roles across Rochdale.
