Job description

We are seeking a caring, patient, and dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join our friendly mainstream primary school in Portsmouth. This rewarding role involves supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) to access learning, build confidence, and thrive both academically and socially within the classroom.

You will work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to provide tailored support, helping pupils engage with lessons and develop key skills in a nurturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 or small group support for pupils with additional needs

  • Assist the class teacher with adapting learning activities to meet individual needs

  • Support pupils’ social, emotional, and behavioural development

  • Help create an inclusive and positive classroom environment

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCO, and external professionals when required

  • Monitor and record pupil progress

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Experience working with children with SEN (e.g., ASD, ADHD, speech and language needs, SEMH)

  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

  • A genuine passion for supporting children’s learning and development

  • Relevant qualifications or training (desirable but not essential)

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
