SEN Teaching Assistant (1:1 Support - SEMH) - Full Time

A welcoming primary school in Petersfield is seeking an experienced and resilient SEN Teaching Assistant to work 1:1 with a Year 4 pupil from after the Easter break.

This role involves supporting a child with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The pupil can present as verbally challenging and requires a calm, consistent, and understanding approach. While the child is not physically aggressive, they may display verbally abusive behaviour at times and need structured support to manage emotions and remain engaged in learning.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide dedicated 1:1 support throughout the school day

• Build a positive, trusting relationship with the pupil

• Manage and de-escalate challenging behaviour in a calm and professional manner

• Support the child’s emotional regulation and engagement with learning

• Facilitate regular movement/physical breaks as part of their support plan

• Work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to implement strategies and targets

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

• Proven experience working with children with SEMH needs

• Strong behaviour management skills

• A patient, resilient, and empathetic approach

• The ability to remain calm under pressure

• Confidence in setting clear boundaries and expectations

• A commitment to supporting the child’s individual needs and progress
