SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne, NE5
Contract Type: Full-time
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

We are currently looking for a compassionate and committed Teaching Assistant with experience supporting students with additional needs, including young people who may be disengaged from learning or present challenging behaviour.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a welcoming and supportive school in Newcastle upon Tyne (NE5). The successful candidate will work alongside teachers and support staff to provide assistance to pupils in KS3 and KS4 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The role involves helping students access education, develop confidence, and reach their full potential.

The role is due to begin following the May half-term break, starting from 1st June. This is a full-time position, Monday to Friday, with working hours of 8:30am to 3:30pm.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support KS3 and KS4 students with SEMH needs
  • Deliver one-to-one and small group classroom support
  • Work collaboratively with the class teacher to provide engaging and inclusive learning experiences
  • Assist in implementing individual education plans (IEPs) and behaviour management strategies
  • Promote positive social, emotional, and behavioural development

Requirements

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs is preferred
  • A patient, proactive, and empathetic attitude
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team
  • Relevant qualifications or training are desirable, although not essential
  • An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one, is essential
  • A minimum of 6 months’ experience working with children or young people within the UK
