Specialist Teaching Assistant – SEN Support (Primary)

Location: Durham (NE1 & surrounding areas)
Contract: Full‑Time
Start Date: ASAP

Are you a patient, caring and dedicated teaching assistant with a passion for supporting children with additional needs? Our welcoming mainstream primary schools in the Durham NE1 area are seeking a Specialist Teaching Assistant to provide focused support to pupils with SEN, helping them to thrive both academically and emotionally.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Providing 1:1 and small‑group support for pupils with a range of special educational needs
  • Adapting activities and resources to meet individual learning needs
  • Helping pupils regulate emotions, build confidence and develop independence
  • Working closely with class teachers and SENCOs to implement personalised learning plans
  • Supporting pupils with communication, social skills and sensory needs
  • Creating a calm, nurturing environment where children feel safe and encouraged
  • Helping pupils engage positively with classroom routines and expectations

What We’re Looking For:

You’ll thrive in this role if you:

  • Have recent experience supporting children with SEN (autism, ADHD, SEMH, speech & language needs, or learning difficulties)
  • Are confident working within a mainstream primary classroom
  • Bring a patient, empathetic and resilient approach
  • Are able to adapt strategies to suit different learning styles
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with pupils, staff and families
  • Hold (or are willing to obtain) an enhanced DBS
  • Are available to start as soon as possible

Relevant qualifications such as a Level 2/3 TA certificate, SEN training or Team Teach are desirable but not essential for the right person.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
