SEN Teaching Assistant - Complex Needs

Job Description

We seek a committed and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant specialising in complex needs to support pupils within a dynamic educational setting. The role involves working closely with teaching staff to deliver tailored support that enables pupils with complex learning difficulties and disabilities to access the curriculum and participate fully in school life.

Job Duties

• Provide direct support to pupils with complex special educational needs throughout the school day, including during lessons, breaks and extracurricular activities.
• Assist in the implementation of individual education plans and behaviour support plans designed by the class teacher or SEN coordinator.
• Support pupils with communication difficulties using appropriate methods and resources to facilitate engagement and learning.
• Adapt learning materials and resources to meet individual pupil needs under the guidance of teaching staff.
• Promote positive behaviour and social interaction, modelling appropriate behaviour and encouraging independence where possible.
• Monitor and record pupil progress and behaviour, providing feedback to teachers and contributing to assessment reports.
• Assist with personal care tasks where necessary, maintaining dignity and respect for the pupil at all times.
• Support the physical needs of pupils, which may include mobility assistance, use of specialised equipment, and safe manual handling techniques.
• Collaborate with external professionals such as speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and educational psychologists as required.
• Maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment, adhering to safeguarding and health and safety policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of Level 2 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning or equivalent relevant experience.
• Recent and demonstrable experience supporting pupils with complex special educational needs.
• Basic first aid certification or willingness to undertake training.

Education

• GCSEs or equivalent qualifications in English and mathematics at grade C/4 or above.
• Further education or training in special educational needs is desirable.

Experience

• Experience working within a school environment, preferably supporting pupils with complex needs.
• Demonstrable ability to implement individual education plans and behaviour support strategies.
• Experience of working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Knowledge and Skills

• Understanding of a range of special educational needs, including autism spectrum disorders, physical disabilities and communication difficulties.
• Strong communication skills, able to interact effectively with pupils, staff and external professionals.
• Patience, empathy and resilience when working with pupils with complex needs.
• Ability to follow instructions precisely and work under supervision.
• Good organisational skills and attention to detail in record keeping and monitoring pupil progress.
• Awareness of safeguarding procedures and commitment to maintaining pupil welfare.

Preferred Qualifications

• Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning or equivalent.
• Training in manual handling and health and safety related to complex needs.
• Experience with assistive technology and communication aids.
• Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practise and current educational legislation.

Working Conditions

• The role is based within a school environment in Greenford, Greater London.
• Work involves supporting pupils both in the classroom and within other school settings.
• The position requires physical activity including assisting with mobility and personal care.
• Occasional exposure to challenging behaviour may be encountered, requiring calm and professional responses.
• Standard working hours are during the school day, Monday to Friday, term time only.
• The role requires adherence to all school policies, including safeguarding and health and safety.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
