Job description

Maths Teacher or SEN Teacher – SEMH

Make a real difference where it matters most

A specialist secondary SEMH provision is seeking a committed and resilient teacher to join a highly supportive team working with young people aged 11 to 16. The primary focus of the role is Maths; however, there is also scope for a strong general SEN teacher who may not be a Maths specialist. Applicants with the right values and experience are encouraged to apply so the role can be discussed in more detail.

This is a rewarding opportunity for a qualified teacher who wants to help re-engage pupils with education, rebuild trust in learning and make a visible impact every day.

About the pupils

Pupils in this setting present with a range of social, emotional and mental health needs. Many have experienced trauma, adverse childhood experiences, anxiety, attachment difficulties, ADHD and autism. Their education has often been disrupted, and some may have negative associations with school.

They learn best in small classes with consistent routines, clear boundaries and adults who are calm, patient and relational in their approach. Emotional regulation, wellbeing and personal development are prioritised alongside academic progress. With the right support, pupils make meaningful gains in confidence, engagement and attainment.

About the role

You will teach Maths across Key Stages 3 and 4 where appropriate, adapting lessons to meet individual needs and starting points. For teachers without a Maths specialism, there is flexibility to teach more broadly across the curriculum while supporting Maths delivery with guidance from the wider team.

You will work closely with experienced teaching assistants, pastoral staff and leaders who understand SEMH and value trauma-informed, restorative practice.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering engaging, accessible lessons that support progress and rebuild confidence

  • Using calm, consistent and trauma-informed approaches to support behaviour and emotional regulation

  • Building strong, trusting relationships that encourage re-engagement with learning

  • Working collaboratively with support staff, therapists and senior leaders to implement personalised plans

  • Monitoring progress and contributing to reviews, assessments and next-step planning

Why join this setting?

  • Small class sizes with high staff-to-pupil ratios

  • A supportive and experienced team with strong leadership and shared values

  • The opportunity to teach creatively and flexibly, without the pressures of a mainstream timetable

  • Ongoing professional development in SEMH and trauma-informed practice

  • Genuine job satisfaction from seeing pupils re-engage, achieve and grow

Working pattern and pay

  • Monday to Friday, full-time, permanent role

  • Part-time may be considered for the right candidate

  • Paid to scale in line with teacher pay and conditions

Who this role is for

This role is suited to a reflective, patient and compassionate teacher who holds QTS and is committed to supporting young people with SEMH needs. Experience in SEMH or alternative provision is welcomed but not essential. Maths specialists are encouraged to apply, but strong SEN teachers who are open to delivering Maths with support are equally welcome. The most important qualities are the right attitude, resilience and a genuine desire to make a difference.

How to apply

Apply now with your CV to be considered. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and the vacancy may close early once a suitable appointment is made. Early application is strongly encouraged.
