SEN Learning Support Assistant

An inclusive and welcoming mainstream secondary school in Portsmouth is seeking a dedicated Learning Support Assistant to join its supportive team. This role is ideal for someone passionate about helping children and young people with mild to moderate additional learning needs to thrive within a mainstream school environment.

You will support students who may need a little extra help to access the curriculum, stay focused and build confidence in the classroom. This may include pupils with mild autism, ADHD, dyslexia, learning difficulties or social and emotional needs, all of whom are taught alongside their peers in mainstream classes.

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will work closely with class teachers and the school’s SENCo to provide one-to-one and small-group support, helping pupils understand tasks, remain engaged with lessons and develop greater independence. You may also support targeted interventions in areas such as literacy, numeracy, organisation, communication and confidence.

A key part of the role will be building positive relationships with students and providing encouragement when they find aspects of school challenging. You will help create a calm, positive and inclusive learning environment while encouraging pupils to become increasingly confident and independent rather than relying on adult support.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with children or young people, although previous school-based or SEN experience is not essential. Experience from backgrounds such as youth work, childcare, mentoring, coaching, care or support work can be highly transferable. Most importantly, you will be patient, approachable, proactive and confident communicating with both students and staff.

A valid DBS certificate on the Update Service is required, or you must be willing to apply for one.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
