Are you passionate about supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs such as anxiety, ADHD, oppositional behaviours, attachment difficulties, low emotional resilience, and social communication challenges? Teaching Personnel are working closely with an SEMH specialist secondary school in Wigan that supports pupils with moderate behavioural and emotional needs. We are seeking a confident, patient, and proactive Behaviour Support Assistant with a trauma-informed approach to help pupils regulate, engage, and thrive in school.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Use trauma-informed and relational strategies to de-escalate challenging behaviours and help pupils feel safe and understood.
  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support focused on emotional regulation, behaviour management, and positive routine building.
  • Work closely with teaching staff, the SENCO, and pastoral teams to implement personalised behaviour plans and consistent support strategies.
  • Support pupils during transitions, unstructured times, and movement around school to promote safety, calmness, and engagement.
  • Help pupils build self-esteem, resilience, and coping skills through encouragement, positive reinforcement, and modelling appropriate behaviour.
  • Monitor and record behaviour patterns, triggers, and successes, feeding back to staff to inform ongoing support plans.

Requirements

To be considered, you must have:

  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
  • Experience supporting SEMH needs, ideally within an education, youth work, or care environment.
  • A patient, proactive, and calm approach, with strong behaviour management skills.
  • References covering the last 24 months.
  • Safeguarding training (Teaching Personnel can provide this).
  • A genuine commitment to working in an SEMH environment with compassion and consistency.

What Teaching Personnel Offer

  • Free access to CPD including behaviour, SEN, and safeguarding training.
  • A dedicated consultant who supports you throughout your placement.
