Job description

SEMH Tutor - Thurrock

Make a Real Difference in a Young Person's Life

Are you the kind of educator who sees the child behind the behaviour?

Do you understand that progress isn't always measured by grades, but by trust, resilience, confidence, and the small wins achieved along the way?

We're looking for dedicated tutors in the Thurrock area who want to do more than teach. This is an opportunity to make a genuine impact on young people who need consistent, patient, and skilled support to re-engage with learning.

The Role

Most of our referrals are for secondary-aged pupils with SEMH and other complex needs. Many have struggled in mainstream education and benefit from structured, reliable support.

You'll be:

  • Building strong professional relationships
  • Creating safe and structured learning environments
  • Supporting both academic progress and emotional regulation
  • Providing a consistent and dependable presence for each pupil

Availability

To be considered, you must be able to commit to:

  • 10-15 hours per week minimum
  • Core hours between 8:30am and 3:30pm
  • Availability Monday to Friday

Consistency is essential, as many pupils thrive on routine and predictable support.

Beyond Teaching

Professional communication and accurate reporting are a key part of the role.

You will be responsible for:

  • Recording attendance accurately
  • Monitoring and documenting pupil progress
  • Providing updates for schools and other professionals
  • Maintaining clear and professional records

Your observations may contribute to EHCP reviews, school planning, and multi-agency discussions, making attention to detail essential.

Who We're Looking For

We welcome applications from those with experience in:

  • Private tuition
  • Mainstream or specialist schools
  • Alternative Provision
  • Youth work or pastoral roles

Ideal candidates will demonstrate:

  • Strong behaviour management rooted in empathy
  • Experience supporting pupils with SEMH or complex needs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Reliability, resilience, and independence

Why This Role Matters

Success isn't always about academic outcomes.

Sometimes progress means:

  • A student staying engaged for an entire session
  • Completing work without escalation
  • Beginning to trust a supportive adult again

If you recognise these as meaningful achievements, you'll fit right in.

Why Join Us?

  • Meaningful and rewarding work
  • Consistent daytime hours
  • The opportunity to make a genuine difference to young people's educational journeys
  • Supportive communication with a wider professional network

If you're passionate about helping young people overcome barriers, rebuild confidence, and achieve meaningful progress, we'd love to hear from you. This is tutoring with purpose, responsibility, and real impact.

All pay rates quoted are inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay.
