Job description

Maths Teacher (SEMH) – Secondary PRU, Salford

Full-Time | Long-Term | Through Teaching Personnel

Are you a passionate Maths teacher who thrives on making a difference?
A supportive Secondary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in the Salford area is seeking a dedicated and resilient Maths Teacher to work with pupils who have SEMH needs (Social, Emotional and Mental Health), such as anxiety, low self-esteem, trauma-related behaviours, attachment difficulties, emotional dysregulation and behaviour that challenges.

A PRU is a specialist setting for young people who cannot attend mainstream school—often due to medical, emotional, behavioural, or social barriers. Teaching here is incredibly rewarding: you’ll help learners rebuild confidence, rediscover their love of learning, and move towards positive outcomes.

✨ The Role

As the Maths Teacher, you’ll create a supportive, structured and motivating learning environment where every pupil can succeed at their own pace.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Planning and delivering engaging Maths lessons for KS3–KS4 pupils, adapting content to individual needs.
  • Using restorative and trauma‑informed approaches to build trust and positive relationships.
  • Managing behaviour in a calm, consistent manner and promoting emotional wellbeing.
  • Assessing pupil progress and setting achievable, personalised targets.
  • Working closely with the SENCO, behaviour mentors, pastoral staff and external professionals.
  • Supporting the reintegration of pupils back into mainstream or alternative provisions where appropriate.
  • Creating differentiated resources to suit varied learning styles and abilities.

✔️ Requirements

To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS/QTLS) – ECTs also welcome.
  • Experience working with SEMH pupils or challenging behaviour (school, PRU, care, youth work etc.)
  • Strong behaviour management and the ability to stay calm and consistent under pressure.
  • A resilient, empathetic and proactive approach to supporting vulnerable learners.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply).
  • Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills.

Why Join This PRU Through Teaching Personnel?

  • Opportunities for training in safeguarding, de-escalation and trauma‑informed practice.
  • Competitive weekly pay via PAYE.
  • A dedicated consultant who supports you throughout your placement.
