The Role
We’re looking for a patient, empathetic and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a supportive KS4 Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in the Stockport area. You’ll work with young people who have experienced barriers to mainstream education, including SEMH needs and challenging behaviour, helping them access their learning, feel safe, and develop the skills to succeed in life.
This is a hands-on, relational role where every day you’ll make a visible difference.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver 1:1 and small-group interventions in core and vocational subjects.
- Track engagement, progress and triggers; feed into personalised learning plans.
- Use calm, consistent, trauma-informed strategies to de-escalate incidents and restore relationships.
- Implement individual behaviour plans, risk assessments and agreed consequences fairly and proportionately.
- Build trust through predictable routines, high warmth/high expectations, and unconditional positive regard.
- Help learners develop emotional regulation, social skills and resilience.
- Work closely with teachers, pastoral staff, SENCO and safeguarding leads to coordinate support.
- Contribute to EHCP reviews, multi-agency meetings and reintegration/transition plans.
About You
- Experience supporting SEMH/PRU/alternative provision or similar high-need settings.
- Confident with positive behaviour support, de-escalation and restorative approaches.
- Calm, patient, empathetic and consistent; able to hold boundaries and build trust.
- Strong communicator who can collaborate with staff, families and external agencies.
- Competent in recording observations, updating plans and using data to inform next steps.
- Committed to safeguarding, equality and inclusive practice.
What We Offer
- A caring, tight-knit team with excellent pastoral and leadership support.
- Ongoing CPD (SEMH, trauma-informed practice, de-escalation, safeguarding, literacy/numeracy interventions).
- The chance to make a meaningful impact every day.
