Learning Support Assistant (LSA) – Alternative Provision / SEMH / SEN
Location: Wirral
Start Dates: Immediate and September starts available
Hours: Full-time
Contract: Long-term placements
Pay Rate: £90–£120 per day (dependent on experience)
About the Role
Teaching Personnel is working in partnership with a trust of schools across the Wirral to recruit committed Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) for a range of Alternative Provision, SEMH, and specialist SEN settings.
These full-time, long-term roles support pupils who require additional help to access education due to social, emotional, and mental health needs (SEMH) or special educational needs (SEN). Opportunities are available for immediate starts, as well as September starts for the new academic year.
You will work closely with teachers and specialist staff to support pupils with needs including SEMH, ASD, ADHD, trauma-related behaviours, and moderate to complex learning difficulties. Many of these settings benefit from smaller class sizes and a personalised approach, meaning your role will be key in helping pupils engage with learning, build confidence, and achieve positive outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small group support tailored to individual pupil needs
- Support pupils with SEMH, SEN, ASD, ADHD, and behavioural needs
- Assist teachers in delivering engaging and accessible lessons
- Implement behaviour support strategies and individual learning plans
- Support pupils to develop confidence, independence, and emotional regulation
- Work positively with pupils who may display challenging behaviour
- Observe and monitor pupil progress and feedback to teaching staff
- Support with personal care where required
- Maintain high standards of safeguarding, behaviour management, and health & safety
- Help create a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment
About You
You may already have experience working with children or young people in education, alternative provision, youth work, care, or support settings. Most importantly, you will be patient, resilient, empathetic, and committed to supporting pupils with additional needs.
These roles suit individuals who can build strong relationships, remain calm in challenging situations, and support pupils in managing behaviour and emotions effectively.
Essential Requirements
- Experience working with children or young people (education, care, youth work, or support roles)
- Experience within a UK school or education setting
- A patient, flexible, and proactive approach
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to adapt to different specialist school environments
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
- Right to work in the UK
- GCSE Grade C / Grade 4 or above (or equivalent) in English and Maths
Desirable
- NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Teaching Assistant, Childcare, or similar
- Experience supporting pupils in SEMH or Alternative Provision settings
- Team Teach or behaviour management training
- Safeguarding training and a strong understanding of child protection procedures

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
