Learning Support Assistant
Job description
We are seeking a dedicated, resilient, and nurturing Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist primary setting supporting children with a range of additional needs.
Pupils are aged 5-11 years and may present with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, ADHD, communication and interaction difficulties, attachment needs, trauma-related behaviours, and moderate learning difficulties.
Although pupils are primary age, many have experienced significant challenges in their lives and education. As a result, some can display behaviours that challenge, struggle with emotional regulation, or require high levels of support to engage positively with learning and relationships. We are looking for individuals who can see beyond behaviour, understand the reasons behind it, and provide the consistency and encouragement pupils need to succeed.
The Role
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will:
- Support pupils to access learning both in and out of the classroom
- Build positive, trusting relationships with children who may have had difficult experiences in education
- Support the development of social, emotional, and communication skills
- Help pupils regulate their emotions and manage challenging situations
- Work closely with teachers and wider professionals to implement individual support strategies
- Encourage independence, confidence, and resilience
- Support learning through play, practical activities, and structured interventions
- Help create a safe, predictable, and nurturing environment where children can thrive
We Are Looking For Someone Who Is:
- Patient, empathetic, and genuinely passionate about working with children
- Calm and confident when managing challenging behaviour
- Resilient and able to maintain a positive approach on difficult days
- Able to build strong relationships whilst maintaining professional boundaries
- Creative and flexible in their approach to supporting individual needs
- A strong communicator who works well as part of a team
- Understanding of the importance of safeguarding and child-centred practice
We are looking for candidates with experience in:
- SEND schools or provisions
- SEMH settings
- Primary education
- Residential childcare
- Foster care support
- Children's mental health services
- Youth work
- Family support work
- Sports coaching
What We Offer
- A supportive and experienced leadership team
- Ongoing training and development opportunities
- Opportunity for permanent employment
- The opportunity to make a genuine and lasting impact on young lives
- A welcoming and collaborative team environment
This role would suit someone who understands that progress is not always measured academically. Sometimes success is helping a child feel safe, build trust, regulate their emotions, make a friend, or believe in themselves for the first time.
If you have the patience, resilience, and passion to support some of the most vulnerable children in education, we would love to hear from you.
All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ’s on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
Teaching Personnel is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. We undertake safeguarding checks on all workers in accordance with DfE statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ this may also include an online search as part of our due diligence on shortlisted applicants.
