Job description

We are currently recruiting for a committed, resilient and enthusiastic Senior Assistant Teacher (HLTA equivalent) to join a specialist secondary provision supporting pupils aged 11–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This is a full-time role (Monday to Friday), starting after the Easter holidays and continuing until the end of the academic year.

About the Role

This is a varied, hands-on position where no two days are the same. You will play a key role in supporting teaching and learning across the school, working closely with class teachers while also taking on responsibility for leading learning when required.

On a day-to-day basis, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting teachers in delivering structured, engaging lessons tailored to individual needs

  • Working 1:1 with pupils and with small groups to reinforce learning and build confidence

  • Leading small group sessions or interventions, particularly for pupils requiring additional support

  • Covering lessons for small classes in the absence of a teacher, ensuring consistency and continuity

  • Managing classroom behaviour using agreed strategies and de-escalation techniques

  • Supporting pupils during less structured times of the day, helping them regulate emotions and remain engaged

  • Contributing to planning, preparation, and adapting resources to suit different learning needs

  • Building strong, positive relationships with pupils to support their personal and academic development

This role would particularly suit someone who already has experience of teaching, tutoring, or leading small groups, and is confident stepping into a more independent role when required.

About the Pupils

The school supports pupils with a range of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Many students have experienced significant challenges in their educational journey and may present with:

  • Difficulties managing emotions such as anger, frustration, or anxiety

  • Low self-esteem and a lack of confidence in their abilities

  • Challenging behaviour, which can include verbal outbursts, refusal to engage, or disruption in class

  • Difficulty building and maintaining positive relationships with peers and adults

As a result, the role requires a calm, consistent and empathetic approach. You will need to be confident in setting clear boundaries while also demonstrating patience, understanding and a genuine commitment to supporting young people to succeed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support high-quality teaching and learning across the school

  • Deliver targeted interventions and small group teaching

  • Provide classroom cover for small groups when required

  • Promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation

  • Help create a safe, structured and supportive learning environment

  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff and wider school teams

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Experience working with secondary-aged pupils (experience within SEMH or similar settings is highly desirable)

  • Experience of teaching, tutoring, or leading small groups

  • HLTA status or equivalent practical experience

  • Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure

  • Confidence in delivering learning independently when required

  • A flexible, proactive and resilient approach

  • A genuine passion for supporting young people with additional needs
