Welsh-Speaking Teaching Assistant – Welsh Immersion Unit

Location: Newport, South Wales

Teaching Personnel is seeking a fluent Welsh-speaking Teaching Assistant to support pupils within a Welsh Immersion Unit based in a Welsh-medium primary school in the Newport area.

This rewarding role involves working closely with a small group of pupils who are transitioning into Welsh-medium education and require additional support to develop their confidence, communication skills, and understanding of the Welsh language. The unit currently consists of nine pupils, providing a focused and supportive learning environment where relationships and consistency are key to success.

The successful candidate will play an important role in helping pupils access learning through Welsh while supporting their social, emotional, and educational development.

The Role

Working alongside the class teacher, you will provide targeted support to pupils as they develop their Welsh language skills and adapt to a Welsh-medium learning environment. You will help create an encouraging and engaging atmosphere where children feel confident using Welsh in both academic and social situations.

The role also involves supporting three pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN), making previous experience working with behavioural, emotional, or educational needs highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

• Support pupils transitioning into Welsh-medium education through daily classroom activities.
• Encourage and develop pupils' confidence communicating through the Welsh language.
• Deliver targeted 1:1 and small-group interventions to support language acquisition and learning.
• Assist the class teacher with preparing resources and delivering engaging lessons.
• Support pupils with ALN to access learning and achieve individual targets.
• Implement strategies to support positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
• Build trusting relationships that promote pupil confidence, engagement, and independence.
• Monitor pupil progress and provide feedback to teaching staff.
• Foster an inclusive and nurturing learning environment where all pupils can thrive.
• Maintain high standards of safeguarding and pupil welfare at all times.

The Ideal Candidate

• Is fluent in Welsh and confident communicating in both spoken and written Welsh.
• Has experience working with primary-aged children in an educational setting.
• Understands the challenges faced by pupils transitioning into Welsh-medium education.
• Has experience supporting children with Additional Learning Needs (ALN), behavioural needs, or social and emotional difficulties.
• Is patient, encouraging, and able to build positive relationships with pupils.
• Can adapt their approach to meet individual learning and support needs.
• Works effectively as part of a wider school team.
• Is passionate about promoting the Welsh language and supporting pupils' educational journeys.

Qualifications and Experience (Desirable)

• Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent.
• Experience working within a Welsh-medium school or Welsh-language setting.
• Experience supporting pupils with ALN, ASD, ADHD, SEMH, or behavioural needs.
• Training in behaviour management, de-escalation, or intervention programmes.
• GCSEs (or equivalent) in English, Maths, and Welsh.

Why Work with Teaching Personnel?

• Competitive weekly pay based on experience and qualifications.
• Full-time opportunity within a supportive Welsh-medium school.
• Access to ongoing CPD and specialist training through the Teaching Personnel Academy.
• Dedicated support from an experienced local consultant.
• Opportunity to make a lasting impact on pupils beginning their Welsh-medium education journey.
• Potential for long-term and permanent opportunities.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Welsh-speaking Teaching Assistant who is passionate about supporting language development and helping children flourish within a Welsh-medium environment. If you have the skills, patience, and enthusiasm to support pupils as they build confidence in Welsh while overcoming additional learning barriers, we would love to hear from you.
