Job description

Our client secondary school in Ashton, is looking for an individual to join their support staff team. The role advertised would be suitable for an individual who holds prior experience in the teaching of pupils whose first language is not English. For 31.5% of the school’s pupils, English is not their first language. This is nearly double the national average, and given that this is the case, presents a great opportunity to a prospective candidate to gain invaluable experience in a support staff role. This opportunity would be of great interest to those looking to start their careers within the education sector. The school is looking for an individual to start ASAP, but the school is also looking for EAL Teaching assistants to work part time on an ongoing basis.

The role would be suitable for those with the following qualifications/experience:

  • A relevant TAL/TEFL qualification (desirable, though not essential)

  • Previous experience working in a support role within a secondary school environment.

  • Graduates holding a degree in MFL OR an individual proficient in speaking multiple languages.


Key aspects of the role include:

  • Supporting students whose primary language is not English, on both a 1:1 and group basis.

  • Working in line with both school policy as well as recommendations made by Ofsted to ensure that specific pupil requirements are met.

  • Monitoring behaviour expectations, and being able to effectively differentiate learning to meet the needs of pupils.

  • Pay between GBP275 - GBP350 per week, relevant to previous experience.

Ofsted have described the leaders at the school as having created a “positive, welcoming culture”. They also noted that the school is “highly inclusive.” The school itself is easily accessible. Located in Ashton, just 30 minutes drive outside of Manchester city centre. There are several other transport links within close proximity to the school itself, including Ashton under Lyne train station.
