Behaviour (SEMH) Teaching Assistant
Location: Carmarthen
Hours: Monday to Friday 8:30 – 3:30
Contract: Temporary with Potential to go Permanent
Salary: £13.75 per hour
We are seeking a dedicated, resilient and compassionate Teaching Assistant to join our specialist team supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about inclusion and committed to helping young people overcome barriers to learning, build emotional regulation skills and re-engage positively with education.
The successful candidate will be appointed and employed through Teaching Personnel, who will manage the recruitment process and provide ongoing employment support.
About The Role
This is a varied and rewarding role that includes a mixture of classroom-based learning and community-based activities. You will work closely with teaching staff and support teams to help pupils develop academically, socially and emotionally.
Responsibilities of a Successful Behaviour (SEMH) Teaching Assistant
- Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs
- Implement targeted behaviour support and intervention strategies
- Support pupils to develop emotional regulation, resilience and coping skills
- De-escalate challenging situations calmly and effectively
- Contribute to individual behaviour and support plans
- Work closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams and external agencies
- Build consistent, positive and trusting relationships with young people
- Promote high expectations for behaviour, engagement and achievement
You will play a key role in helping pupils feel safe, understood and ready to learn.
SEMH Experience – Why It’s Essential
Pupils within this provision may present with:
- Challenging behaviour
- Emotional dysregulation
- Anxiety, trauma or attachment needs
Previous experience working with SEMH, behaviour support, youth work, care, or similar settings is essential. You’ll need to be calm under pressure, resilient, patient and able to respond positively to challenging situations while maintaining clear boundaries and expectations.
Requirements
- Enhanced DBS disclosure (or able to obtain one)
- Full UK Driving license is desired
- Registration for the EWC
- Relevant qualifications (e.g. Teaching Assistant qualification, CACHE, Health & Social Care, Youth Work, or similar)
- Willingness to complete full safeguarding and compliance checks

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
